As the bells fell silent, Kaelen set out for the east bridge where the gathering was said to be held. The streets narrowed there, curling into slopes that led toward the cliffs above the sea. Stone arches, weathered by centuries of salt wind, loomed like guardians. At the final gate, a figure in silver mail stood waiting—a woman whose bearing was both regal and sharp as a drawn blade. Her dark hair was bound in a crown-braid, and her cloak bore the mark of the city’s wardens.
“You carry the sigil?” she asked, voice steady as steel.
Kaelen held out the parchment. Her eyes flicked to it, then to him. “You are younger than I expected,” she said. “But the Trialhold does not summon by age. Come. The others wait.”
He followed her through the gate into a courtyard sunk into the cliffside. There, six others stood, each marked by difference—an old scholar whose robe smelled faintly of ink, a broad-shouldered mercenary with a scar over his brow, a quiet woman cloaked in green who held a staff carved with runes, a sailor still smelling of tar and brine, and two figures who seemed to argue even as they waited: twins, pale and sharp-eyed, with matching rings of onyx. Seven in total, Kaelen realized, and with him, eight.
The warden raised her hand for silence. “I am Captain Serenya of the Wardens. You are here because the Trialhold has awakened. For centuries, it slept beneath our city, its gates locked by the will of those who forged Bridgewind’s very foundations. The Trialhold is not a dungeon, nor a treasure-vault. It is a crucible. It measures those who answer its call. If you succeed, you emerge with truths no library holds. If you fail, the stone takes you.”
The mercenary chuckled, though unease edged his voice. “And we’re fools enough to walk into it.”
“Not fools,” said the scholar. His eyes glittered behind spectacles thick with dust. “Chosen. Do you not feel it? I have studied scraps of this sigil all my life, and now it is here, alive. The Trialhold remembers us, even if we forgot it.”
The twins exchanged glances. The woman in green remained silent. Kaelen felt his heartbeat quicken. Chosen or fool, he knew he could not turn away.
Serenya gestured to a flight of stone steps carved into the cliff itself. “Come, then. The Trialhold waits.
