Clave

Clave is one of the world’s oldest percussion ideas—a simple act of striking wood that became a universal way of marking time, accent, and pulse. From ancient African cultures to Egyptian dancers clapping wooden instruments as early as 3000 B.C., the steady beat of clave has guided ritual, labor, and celebration. Across the Atlantic, it evolved into the rhythmic core of Cuban music, shaping rumba, son, salsa, and the global sound of Afro-Latin traditions.

This book introduces clave as both instrument and concept, tracing its history while grounding it in practice. Through African and Cuban bell patterns, traditional and modern clave rhythms, and creative explorations on drum set and hand percussion, readers learn not only how clave works but why it feels so essential.

Both foundation and philosophy, clave offers endless possibilities. Its power lies in simplicity—an ancient rhythm that continues to inspire music worldwide.
