The first thing that struck him about Drumfall was the silence.
Not the peaceful hush of a sleeping hamlet, nor the reverent quiet of monks at prayer, but a silence heavy as iron, oppressive, a silence that seemed to press against the skull. Birds avoided the crooked rooftops. The wind, though steady, carried no laughter of children, no whistling of shepherds. It whispered only through warped shutters and the black ribs of abandoned chimneys.
The scholar drew his cloak tighter. His boots crunched on the gravel road, the sound too loud, too sharp in the emptiness. He paused before the weathered signpost that leaned at the edge of the path. Its wood was split, its carving nearly illegible, but the letters still bore the name:
DRUMFALL.
The name alone carried weight in his thoughts. He had seen it scribbled in the margins of manuscripts, footnotes of obscure tomes, whispered warnings between scribes who fancied themselves occult historians. Few dared to write of it plainly. Fewer still would admit to setting foot here.
And yet here he was.
The scholar—Aelric by name, though he seldom offered it—adjusted the satchel at his side. Within it lay parchment, quills, vials of ink, and a leather-bound codex half-filled with his own observations. He was not merely a collector of lore; he was a seeker, one who had crossed mountains and marshes, deserts and drowned coasts, chasing fragments of stories others feared to remember. Where others flinched from the shadow of myth, Aelric leaned closer to examine its bones.
Now, the shadow was all around him.
Drumfall was smaller than he had expected. Rows of cottages lined the main road, their stone walls cracked, their thatch roofs rotting. Doors sagged on rusted hinges. Windows gaped like sockets drained of light. A church stood at the far end, its steeple leaning slightly, a crooked finger pointing to a pale sky. Beyond it, low hills curved around the valley, hemming the village in like a shallow bowl.
But there were signs of life still. Thin curls of smoke rose from a few chimneys. A woman’s figure briefly appeared at a window, then vanished as soon as Aelric’s gaze lifted.
