The former Italsider steelworks at Bagnoli occupies a vast coastal strip west of Naples, between the volcanic hills of Posillipo and the Phlegraean Fields and the waters of the Gulf. Founded in 1905 and closed in 1993 after nearly ninety years of continuous production, the plant left behind a landscape of blast furnaces, workshops, chimneys, and an artificial landfill extending into the sea. This volume observes that landscape through a sequence of photographs taken both inside the former industrial area and from the surrounding heights, reading Bagnoli as a place suspended between what it was and what it has not yet become.
