The last rays of the sun bled across the sky like molten gold, seeping into the clouds and staining them in hues of rose and amber. Elara stood at the edge of the dusty tavern courtyard, her heart pounding as she watched the horizon. Each day at dusk, she returned to this perch—a cluster of weathered stones crowned with the remnants of ancient carvings—to study the map she had uncovered in her family’s archives. The pieces of parchment, held together by fraying leather straps, were brittle with age, but in the fading light she could still make out the intricate inked trails winding across mountains, rivers, and forests that no living soul believed existed.
Her booted feet shifted against the packed earth, the leather soles kicking up tiny clouds of red dust. A cool breeze rose from the west, carrying with it the tang of wild mint and the distant cry of a night bird. Elara drew her cloak tighter around her shoulders, its deep violet folds blending with the gathering twilight. The map trembled in her hands as a gust of wind ruffled its brittle corners, and she gripped it tighter, determined not to let it slip away.
Memories of her father’s last words echoed in her mind: “Trust the map, Elara. It will show you where the old kingdoms lie, beyond where our eyes have ever seen. But be warned—where light fades, shadows awaken.” He had died when she was but a child, leaving her with half-formed tales of realms swallowed by time. In the years since, she had pieced together fragments of lore from broken texts and whispered rumors. Yet none of those half-truths compared to the one tangible relic she now held—the Cartographia Lucida, the luminous map her father had devoted his life to restoring.
Below the carved stones, the tavern’s lanterns flickered to life, one by one illuminating the encircling tables where travelers shared stew and tale. Elara could hear the hum of conversation—the clink of mugs, the laughter of merchants, the low murmur of guards counting coins. But her mind was elsewhere. She traced a faded ink line with her fingertip: a serpentine path leading from the border fortress of Grayhaven, through the Shattered Vale, up to a place marked only by a triangular sigil and the phrase “Beyond Evening Shadows.”
Tonight was the turning point.
