FUNDAMENTALS OF ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING: From Semiconductor Physics to Integrated Systems (English Edition)

Electronics engineering is the discipline that turned the physics of the electron into the fabric of modern life. In little more than a century it has progressed from the first vacuum tubes to integrated circuits containing tens of billions of transistors, and its products — computing, communication, instrumentation, power conversion, control — now mediate nearly every human activity. A student entering the field today inherits both an extraordinary intellectual tradition and an unusually coherent one: a modest set of physical principles and circuit theorems, mastered once, illuminates everything from a hearing aid to a data centre.
This book is a complete first course in electronics engineering, written for undergraduate students of electronics, electrical, computer and allied engineering disciplines, and for the self-directed learner who wants a rigorous yet readable path into the subject. It assumes only introductory calculus and physics. Everything else — circuit analysis, semiconductor physics, devices, analogue and digital circuits, power, fabrication, instrumentation and communication — is developed from first principles within these pages.
The organisation follows the logic of the subject itself. Chapters 1 to 3 lay the foundations: what electronics is and how it developed; the laws and theorems of electric circuits; and the passive components and alternating-current concepts on which all later analysis rests. Chapters 4 and 5 descend into the semiconductor: the physics of doped silicon and the p–n junction, and the diode with its rich catalogue of applications. Chapters 6 to 8 develop the transistor — bipolar and field-effect — from device physics through biasing to complete small-signal amplifiers and their frequency behaviour. Chapters 9 and 10 present the operational amplifier and the theory of feedback and oscillation, the twin pillars of analogue design. Chapter 11 treats power electronics and regulated supplies, the muscle behind every system. Chapters 12 and 13 build digital electronics from number systems and logic gates through combinational and sequential design to data converters and memory. Chapter 14 explains how integrated circuits are actually made, from sand to packaged chip, and Chapter 15 closes with the instruments by which circuits are measured and the communication systems that connect them to the world.
Certain convictions have shaped the writing throughout. First, that understanding precedes procedure: every formula in this book is derived or physically motivated before it is used, because a formula whose origin is understood is remembered, and one merely memorised is soon misapplied. Second, that worked examples teach what exposition alone cannot: each chapter contains fully worked numerical examples chosen to be representative of real design decisions, with standard component values and honest engineering approximations. Third, that the practical and the theoretical belong together: datasheets, ratings, thermal design, tolerances, safety and laboratory craft appear alongside the mathematics, because the working engineer needs both. Fourth, that history matters: knowing why and by whom an idea was introduced — Ohm and Kirchhoff, Shockley and Bardeen and Brattain, Kilby and Noyce, Black and Shannon — turns a catalogue of facts into a living subject.
