About the author:

William John Loftie (1839–1911) was an Irish-born British clergyman, antiquary, and prolific writer whose interests ranged across art, architecture, history, and the heritage of London. Born in County Armagh, he studied at Trinity College, Dublin, graduating B.A. in 1862, and was ordained in 1865. He later served as assistant chaplain of the Chapel Royal, Savoy, while pursuing a parallel career as a writer and antiquarian. His numerous publications include A History of London, Westminster Abbey, The Cathedral Churches of England, Inigo Jones and Sir Christopher Wren, and A Plea for Art in the House.
