Bob Newkirk was a state law enforcement officer for the Florida Board of Conservation, AKA the Florida Marine Patrol, spending more than five years enforcing saltwater fishing and boating laws. Drawing on his own real-life experiences he puts the reader in his shoes as he describes the pursuit of crawfish thieves, boat rescues, arrests of turtle poachers, and racial demonstrations of the 1960’s. In 1969, as a deputy sheriff, he tells what it’s like to serve warrants, be assaulted, make arrests, vehicle chases, foot chases, save lives, use of a police dog, and other stories, some quite humorous. In 1971, only a few weeks after the Palestine Liberation Organization hijacked four airliners, Mr. Newkirk was hired and trained by the U. S. Treasury Department as a Federal Air Marshal. The next three years he flew more than 860,000 nautical miles aboard U. S. air carriers to most domestic airports and many foreign countries. He was authorized to use deadly force to protect aircraft, passengers and crews from hijackings. Some events are described. Working security at Miami International Airport, he was not only involved in screening passengers boarding aircraft, but also drug seizures, arrests, and foot chases on the concourses, outside the main terminal, and international arrivals area. Events not witnessed by the general public. Retiring from the Federal Aviation Administration in 2002 after 32 years of service, he lives with his wife, Carol, in Crestview, Florida.
