At seventy-three, my stream of consciousness has long abandoned chronological order. The cell phone walks away to parts unknown but minute details of events decades ago are crystal clear. Memory conjures up the banal and unmentionable, along with episodes that stand above the rest.

Reducing the list to thirty-one called for painful editing. Several omitted stories may have proven interesting but didn’t stimulate the creative juice. Others might stir the readers’ imagination, but I didn’t include them here. Perhaps this sets talented writers apart from those who shy away from exposing trauma they don’t have the courage to publish.

The narrative spans six decades from the late ’50s to the present (2021), from West Virginia to the Philippines. Precious few digital records survive from one format to another. Our floppy disks are deep in the landfill. Leatherbarkis my humble effort to leave a personal record of our chaotic times.

The illustrations are linocuts, images carved on battleship linoleum, inked, and printed by hand. A reduction method enabled each color to be pulled from a single block.
