Lyran Trigonometry Coursebook 5: Contest Trigonometry and Infinite Processes

This is Book 5 of 7 in the Lyran Trigonometry Coursebooks series. It pairs classical contest trigonometry with infinite-process methods, building on the identity and triangle foundations of the earlier coursebooks while remaining usable as a self-contained training volume.

The coursebook develops normalization, trigonometric equation solving, auxiliary-angle methods, trigonometric detours, sums and products, telescoping patterns, limits, inequalities, monotonicity, Fourier series, finite Fourier filters, and roots-of-unity techniques. These topics connect familiar identities to sequences, periodicity, convergence, algebraic structure, and demanding olympiad problems.

The central habit is recognition under pressure. Before expanding an expression or beginning a long computation, ask what the problem is really requesting: a substitution, a product-to-sum identity, a telescoping pattern, an auxiliary angle, a finite Fourier filter, a roots-of-unity argument, or a monotonicity principle. The goal is to choose the right language before the algebra becomes complicated.

Each coursebook is self-contained: lessons, worked examples, and exercises appear in Part I, followed by complete solutions in Part II. The solutions emphasize normalization, domain and zero-case checks, the first decisive transformation, and the reason a chosen method succeeds.

Book 5 provides much of the contest engine used later in Book 7’s global synthesis. It also prepares readers for the change of geometry in Book 6, where familiar trigonometric laws are extended to spherical and curved-space settings.

Readers seeking the complete, continuous Class Zero Trigonometry curriculum can use Olympiad Algebra Lessons Book 2: Fundamentals of Trigonometry with its companion, Olympiad Algebra Solutions Manual for Book 2: Fundamentals of Trigonometry. This focused coursebook does not require either volume, because its own complete solutions are included in Part II.
