The last twenty years there has been a shift to home schooling. Parents across the country have lost confidence in the current American school system. Teachers are discouraged at the fact that after spending long days in the classroom student success seems to be beyond reach. All indicators have shown little progress if any in reading and mathematics scores. Countries around the world are doing a much better job educating their students. I wrote this book being a former teacher and current reading and math consultant to offer a pathway into improving our country’s student success. It will demonstrate a plethora of key techniques and methods that can transform our current educational stagnation. Students whether home schooled or in the classroom can improve their learning potential despite whatever learning challenges they might have. Our learning skills begin at an early age because we are born with a passion to learn. Then, it seems to fade away as students’ progress through-out the grade levels. Currently they seem to dissipate earlier each year. Most curriculum’s focal point is in students using their current potential to learn. Many classrooms still rely on outdated methods – rote memorization. This book gives special importance to brain growth. So, the philosophical focus is that learning is shaped by the most powerful tool known to man, “Our Brain.” It can be supercharged to process, remember, recall, and apply information. Scientific research on the important tools necessary for learning are well established. They begin at an early stage of our lives and after a while we discover our independent nature as well as our ability for creativity. It takes shape by our ability to observe, question, discriminate, and engage the physical world around us. Learning is personal, it is process, and it is developmental. These tools like concentration enhances the brain’s ability to store memory and actually modifies the brain in such a way that it becomes easier to learn in the future. It also lays the foundation for another critical brain tool called focus. The ability to focus and learning to focus on what is important begins the fundamental principle of success. Sharpening your focus can lead to promoting ambition and improving curiosity. Curiosity which is initiated by being impressed begins the development of strong attention habits. It increases better decision-making abilities (making less mistakes). It also leads to higher participation in classroom discussion. Discussion improves retrieval abilities and deepens and/or sharpens memory. Reflection the ultimate learning tool makes information easier to internalize and initiates an eagerness to explore. It leaves a feeling of wanting to remember. Students have a right to receive a proper education. By the end of their elementary year, they should be able to know their times tables, be skilled in problem solving and read at a six-grade level and even higher. This is what this book is all about. It introduces techniques and methods to teachers and home school mentors so they can build a strong learning environment. Strong reading skills reduce resistance to learning and help develop confident achievers. Proper reading techniques and spelling and vocabulary activities promote life-long reading habits. Replacing the current use of trial & error strategies with algebraic principles and geometric shape activities in the elementary will increase their problem-solving skills. We must give our students the opportunity to sharpen their cognitive skills to embrace the challenges of the future.
