For over four decades, one small British record label has quietly reshaped the sound of underground music without ever quite becoming a household name. Built around Sherwood as its only constant, On-U Sound gathered an extraordinary, ever-shifting cast: Prince Far I's thunderous voice, Bim Sherman's gentler one, the Slits' Ari Up crossing over from punk, three American session musicians who had already shaped early hip-hop before becoming Tackhead, and a young Bristol roofer named Gary Clail who improvised his way onto the label's only true chart hit.

Along the way, the label's dub techniques found their way into Depeche Mode remixes, a Nine Inch Nails production credit, and collaborations with industrial pioneers who had no obvious business working with a reggae producer at all.

This is also, unavoidably, a book about loss. Prince Far I, Bim Sherman, Style Scott, Keith LeBlanc, Mark Stewart, Ari Up, and Lee "Scratch" Perry all passed through On-U Sound's story and are all gone now, several of them within the last few years.

Drawing on original interviews conducted with Adrian Sherwood and Mark Stewart, alongside deep archival research, this unauthorized biography traces a label that never had a business plan, only a working method: find serious musicians willing to try something that hasn't been tried yet, and see what happens when the tape starts rolling.
