Throughout these pages, readers will travel with me from my childhood in Iran—growing up without my father, living through revolution, loss, and hardship—to building a martial arts school in America that became far more than a place to learn punches and kicks. It became a laboratory for character, leadership, community, and hope.

The stories range from deeply personal memories of my mother, my family, and my mentors, to humorous moments on the training floor, difficult lessons learned through failure, and quiet realizations that changed the way I teach and live.

The central theme of Open Hands is that martial arts is not the destination—it is the vehicle.

How can we use martial arts to help people become wiser, kinder, stronger, and more compassionate human beings?

The book explores ideas such as:
