That single proposition anchors Position, a work of literary nonfiction that follows one idea across three centuries and a dozen cities: new money never diffuses evenly through an economy. This is not a polemic against capitalism, and it is not a list of villains. Its category is not blame but position—a structural fact, not a moral one. The people standing near the mouth of the pipe didn't, in the ordinary sense, choose to be there. The people standing in the puddle at its end already know the water is half gone. Thiessen's task, as he puts it, is to describe the mechanism to the people it benefits. The people it costs need no explanation.
