The air was heavy with the perfume of ash. It drifted in ghostly spirals, lifted by the faintest breath of wind, and then fell again in a rain of gray that coated the broken stones like a second skin. The land had not known fire for many years, yet the scent lingered—as if the earth itself had taken the memory of flame and made it eternal.
Beneath a sky of pale copper clouds, a lone figure stirred among the ruins. He lay cradled in the husk of a collapsed wall, fragments of carved marble and splintered beams sheltering him like ribs of a broken beast. His name was Cael, though the memory of it came late and slow, trickling back to him like water seeping through cracked stone. For a long while he had no words, no certainty—only the taste of smoke in his mouth and the sound of silence so vast it seemed alive.
He rose unsteadily, brushing ash from his hands, his clothes, his hair. The fabric he wore was unfamiliar to him, though it seemed well crafted once—dark wool lined with faint silver stitching that had frayed with time. Across his chest lay a band of hardened leather, bearing no insignia, though the faint impression of an emblem remained. He traced it with trembling fingers but found no clarity. Memory was a shattered mirror, and each shard cut him when he tried to grasp it.
The world around him was a grave. What had once been a city sprawled across the valley, though now it resembled the hollow skeleton of something mighty brought low. Towers broken at the middle, archways leaning drunkenly, streets buried under centuries of dust. Even the air seemed reluctant to stir, as though motion would wake the dead who lingered beneath the stones.
Yet even in ruin, beauty lingered. Veins of gold in the marble glimmered faintly beneath the dim light, and here and there mosaics survived—bright fragments of cobalt and emerald forming shapes half-visible: crowns, flames, wings. Cael found his eyes drawn to them as if they whispered of meanings he had once known.
He walked slowly through the streets, his footsteps muffled by the thick carpet of ash. Each breath stirred motes into the air, making the ruins shimmer as though the city itself exhaled in time with him. He felt watched, though no eyes remained to see. Perhaps it was the thrones he felt—the thrones he did not yet know by name, but sensed in the marrow of his bones.
