The village of Rocketroot was unlike any other place in the known lands. To a traveler’s eye, it looked impossible—houses and halls perched upon the curling, twisting roots of a colossal tree that no longer bore leaves, a tree so vast it seemed to have once connected the sky to the earth. The roots jutted from the cliffsides and vanished into the misty abyss below, their surfaces wide and flat enough to hold entire marketplaces. Bridges of rope and timber crisscrossed between them, swaying in the high winds that whistled through the cliffs. At night, lanterns strung along these bridges glowed like fireflies suspended in air, and the whole village shimmered like a dream balanced on the edge of eternity.
No one alive could remember when the tree had last been whole. No one knew its name, though the elders claimed it had many: the Pillar of Dawn, the Sky-Root, the Forgotten Spire. Most simply called it the Worldroot. Rocketroot had been built on its remains, a place of survival and stubbornness where people lived in balance with the constant danger of the cliffs. Life was hard here, but it was also filled with stories—stories whispered at night around the hearth or sung by sailors who came to trade in the mist-harbor below.
One such story was the tale of the Beacon at Cliffforge. It was said that far along the roots, where the cliffs folded inward like the teeth of some ancient beast, a stone beacon stood untouched by time. No storm had weathered it, no vine dared crawl across its black surface. Travelers spoke of hearing voices when they passed near it, voices like the sigh of wind through hollow bone. The elders warned children not to wander toward Cliffforge, but children, as always, listened only half to warnings and twice as much to mysteries.
Among these children was Kaelen, a boy of seventeen who carried the restless heart of someone meant to walk farther than the roots of his birth. He had grown up in the weaving house of his aunt, a stern woman whose hands were always busy with thread and cloth. His parents had vanished years ago in a storm along the cliffs—one of those tragedies whispered about but never fully explained. Kaelen seldom asked; he knew better than to stir sorrow in his aunt’s heart. Yet in his own, a gap yawned wide, a hunger for answers and for something beyond the tangle of roots and rope bridges.
That night, as he sat on the ledge outside the weaving house, Kaelen stared into the mist below. Lanternlight glimmered faintly, but the abyss swallowed it almost immediately, as if the darkness beneath Rocketroot could never be filled. The wind carried strange whispers up from
