---Introduction---
This book has two purposes. The first is to help students pass the regular reports and tests assigned in their semiconductor engineering classes. Even when trying to tackle reports and tests, lazy students (the author was one such student) don't know where to begin. If they attended classes regularly and read the textbook, this wouldn't happen, but there's nothing you can do about what's already happened. I hope that you will use this book to reclaim the time you should have spent studying. This book is based on the author's experience of relearning semiconductor engineering after receiving a job offer from a CMOS circuit design company. It covers the entire scope of semiconductor engineering, so by solving the problems in this book and then supplementing any gaps with past questions or specialized books, you'll be sure to receive credits.
The second purpose is to help people who need knowledge of semiconductor engineering for university research or company work to understand the operation of pn junction diodes, bipolar transistors, MOS transistors, etc. The author is involved in CMOS analog circuit design, and from that experience believes he understands the scope of semiconductor engineering required in practice. For example, this book omits discussion of crystallography and quantum mechanics. When studying semiconductor engineering, one almost always starts by talking about crystallography and quantum mechanics, but no one at work starts the conversation with crystallography or quantum mechanics. Those involved in research and development of semiconductor devices themselves may need knowledge of crystallography and quantum mechanics, but it would be better to first understand each device (pn junction diode, bipolar transistor, MOS transistor) before reviewing crystallography and quantum mechanics. At the very least, if you want to design CMOS analog circuits, understanding device operation is sufficient.
