The tremendous advances in design and development of Steel Pan instruments have not been
accompanied by a matching development in capability to address the music documenti ng and
sharing challenges faced by Steel Pan musicians who are unfamiliar with standard notation.

Steel Pan Tablature (PAN TAB) is a music notati on system that is intuiti ve, and very easy for Steel
Pan musicians to understand and apply. It is based on a combinati on of Note Names with which
Pannist are familiar, together with a Music Staff that is derived from the design characteristi cs of
the instruments in the steel pan family.

PANTAB provides a number of tools for “writi ng down” steel pan music and supplementi ng
“learning by rote.”

It also provides a sound foundati on for learning and eventually mastering Standard Notation.

PAN TAB is compati ble with but does not require previous knowledge of standard notati on. The
additi on of PAN TAB to standard notati on scores will open new vistas to the steel pan community,
make original Steel Pan music more available to other musicians, and further the integrati on of
Steel Pan instruments into conventi onal ensembles and orchestras.
