The wind carried the scent of salt and iron through the broken streets of Stormway. Once, the harbor had sung with the clamor of hammers on ship hulls, the bawdy laughter of sailors stumbling between taverns, and the constant creak of ropes pulling against masts. Now it groaned beneath the weight of silence, punctuated only by the crash of waves against ruined docks.
Alaric Stone, son of a shipwright, picked his way across the splintered remains of a pier that jutted out like broken ribs into the bay. The tide had claimed half the wood, snapping beams like dry twigs, and here and there, shattered hulls of proud vessels listed on their sides, their sails tangled and soaked, their painted names swallowed by the sea. The boy crouched, his dark eyes catching faint glimmers beneath the water — lanterns, cargo, even bones, drifting among kelp.
He straightened with a shiver. Stormway was not dead, not yet, but something vital had been carved from it.
Behind him, the city rose along the cliffs, its white stone houses scarred black with smoke. Chimneys leaned like crooked teeth, shutters dangled by single hinges, and marketplaces where merchants once hawked silks and spices lay eerily vacant. The bells of the Cathedral of Nine Tides, once the pride of Stormway, had fallen silent since the catastrophe three weeks past.
Three weeks, Alaric thought grimly. That was all it had taken to tear apart what generations had built.
Rumors of the Breaking
People called it “the Breaking.” No one agreed on its cause. Some swore a seaquake had shaken the cliffs, tumbling warehouses into the water. Others whispered of unnatural storms, claiming they had seen lightning rise from the sea itself, not fall from the sky. The most fearful muttered of curses, of old gods long buried in the deep, returning to punish Stormway for its arrogance.
Whatever the truth, the harbor was unrecognizable.
Merchants cursed their losses, staring at warehouses flooded beyond salvage. Fishers who had once known the tides like the lines of their palms now claimed the waters moved strangely, currents pulling against reason. The bravest among them returned pale and trembling
