Minneapolis in 1958 was not where American pop, funk, rock and R&B music was made. By 1984 it was. Uptown tells the story of how Prince Rogers Nelson and the musicians around him — André Cymone, Morris Day, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Wendy and Lisa, Sheila E., and a generation of Northside players — built the Minneapolis Sound in basements, community centers, and a converted warehouse on First Avenue, and then exported it to the rest of the world.
