I write poetry for two reasons: first, so I'll never be famous; and second, so I can transform my confusing thoughts and feelings into something a lot of other people can also be confused by. Poetry is not some sophisticated and noble pursuit, full of philosophical subtleties and depth. Often instead it is more like the first-week-back-to-grade-school essay titled ‘What I Did On My Summer Vacation’ presented as an interpretative dance. It’s a distillation of emotions and wordplay often so subjective it has an audience of one.

BUT, the same language tools used by a song writer, or an elder who passes on the heart of the people to a new generation, or a satirist, or a teacher, or anyone whose words are meant to be remembered by and ingrained in the listener, can inspire. If I can do that with even one of these poems, for even one person other than me, the effort was worth it.

I decided recently to commemorate turning sixty-four this year (2026) by writing sixty-four new poems. Here they are!

I've been told my poetry reflects real life: it's bad.

Okay, they don't really tell me that - they know how sensitive I am (but I have been told I can be funny). I'm sixty-four, not yet retired, so I write about work, spirituality, maturity, the challenges of living where money is more important to the government than people are, the stuff that everyone deals with - but the good stuff, too - stuff that makes me look forward to the years to come.
