Past research has examined the high prevalence rate of co-occurring autism and epilepsy, as well as the secondary diagnoses that are frequently seen when these diagnoses co-occur. Some of these secondary challenges include learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, sensory sensitivity, gastrointestinal and sleep disorders, challenges with social reciprocity and understanding of social cues and emotional expression, memory and attention deficits, mood disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and problems with language delay and/or expressive and receptive language. A lack of clarity exists on whether these deficits are largely associated with the separate diagnoses of autism and epilepsy or are correlated with the diagnosis of both disorders occurring in conjunction with one another. With regard to challenges with language specifically, historical research has been unable to delineate the etiology of the language impairment as both autism and epilepsy affect neurodevelopment and can cause diffuse and cumulative changes in cognitive skill acquisition. As a result of a lack of understanding about the etiology, interventions for language acquisition, language comprehension and expression, and prognoses of development of language skills have been limited. This work provides a deeper analysis of these challenges and provides clarity about the relationship between language impairment with this specific population and discusses current and future direction for interventions and research.
*While most of this book is written at a level that can be understood by most readers, there are parts of it that go into an in-depth analysis of neuropsychology and are a bit more challenging to digest as they discuss neurology, medical terminology, and genetics.
