This manual will assist with the identification of performance issues, discuss the evaluation of indexes, and present T-SQL coding techniques that will reduce the time it takes for stored procedures and queries to run. This is a guide to SQL Server performance tuning that does not address hardware, the analysis of query plans, or the configuration of tuning wizards. The importance of clustered indexes and primary keys on database tables is expected to already be understood. This guide demonstrates how T-SQL code can be rewritten to perform better and introduces often overlooked syntax. Multiple examples in this work exhibit how to eliminate CURSORs, and SQL Server partitioned tables are discussed in detail. Every database engineer wants their stored procedures, queries, and views to run as fast as possible, and the topics presented in this work will assist in reaching that often elusive goal without having to wade through hundreds of pages of material.
