Then a ranger drove up his mountain with a folder. What Stan does not know, while he turns over what that promise is worth, is that six hundred light-years out a star that has been dimming all spring is three days from doing something nobody has a model for. His wife has already found the number in her notebook. She has checked it three times. She does not like it. Before the Second Sun is a prequel short story to The Severed Sky, Book One of The Reality Meld. It stands on its own. The novel picks up two hours before the sky tears open.
