ABOUT THE EXHIBITION Between Here & Becoming is an exploration of liminal space, the quiet, often unspoken moments of transition that exist between who we have been and who we are becoming. This exhibition centers uncertainty, thresholds, and states of waiting as meaningful sites of transformation rather than moments to rush through or resolve. We’re seeking work that reflects identity in motion: bodies, landscapes, relationships, and inner worlds caught mid-shift. Tenderness, vulnerability, and ambiguity are not treated as weaknesses, but as essential conditions for growth. In honoring the in-between, Between Here & Becoming invites viewers to sit with flux, to recognize themselves within change, and to find meaning in the unfolding rather than the arrival. ABOUT THE CURATOR Between Here & Becoming is curated by Sergio Gomez, a Mexican-American visual artist, curator, and arts educator whose work explores cycles of life through large-scale figurative abstraction and charcoal drawing. Now based in South Florida after many years in Chicago, he creates art as a sanctuary where the spiritual intersects with the human experience, inviting reflection and stillness. Born and raised in Mexico City, Gomez draws on the intensity of urban life, which continues to inform the emotional depth of his work. His figures often emerge and dissolve through layered mark-making, light, and atmosphere, exploring themes of transformation, identity, and renewal. He received his MFA in Painting from Northern Illinois University and has exhibited widely, with over 45 solo exhibitions and more than 150 group exhibitions internationally. His work is held in public and private collections, including the National Museum of Mexican Art. In addition to his studio practice, Gomez is an accomplished curator and educator. He has curated over 100 exhibitions, served as Director of Exhibitions at the Zhou B. Art Center, and is the founder of 33 Contemporary Gallery.
