Carlo Dolci (Florence, 25 May 1616 - Florence, 17 January 1686) was the greatest Florentine painter of the seventeenth century and enjoyed extraordinary fame during his lifetime and until the nineteenth century when the taste for his refined and fluid religious images began to decline. A painter above all of the individual figures, he was an appreciated portraitist and one of the most profound interpreters of the sacred in painting.His refined technique became more complex and sophisticated as he matured, although his tormented personality became more evident in his work after the 1640s. The " grande maniera ", the vigorous coloring and luminosity, combined with the emotion and dynamism of the Bolognese school, are unusual in the style of Dolci and the Florentine Baroque. Immersed in the long tradition of Florentine painting, Dolci was immune to the new style, tied to his home school, rigid in its academicism. Wittkower describes him as the Florentine version, in terms of religious themes, of the Roman Sassoferrato. Pilkington defines his style as clean and inexpressive. He was criticized for investing too much work in each of his paintings, and to giving to his personages an appearance closer to marble than to flesh, a weakness into which Agnolo Bronzino also fell.During the period of Sentimentalism (late XVII century) Dolce was in great fashion among the noble connoisseurs of art, who took many of his works to the Northern half of Europe. However, a hundred years later there was a reaction, and one of his critics called Dolci "the most pathetic" of Italian painters.
