The Codex Vaticanus 3773 B: a Coffee-table Codex by the Oscura Press of New Mexico.
This is a Mexican codex, one in a series of ten codexes which the Oscura Press is publishing for the first time ever in digital form this year.
One of these ten books is a forgery.
The others are authentic, they’re hundreds of years old, and date from the time of the Spanish conquest of Mexico. Each of these shows the Aztecs as they once were, as they wanted themselves to be seen. These are books -- but I won’t say what they’re about. I don’t want to spoil the experience for you of reading these codexes for the first time, so I’m not including a commentary, and I’m not including an explanation of any sort. I will let the images and texts speak for themselves. If after reading this you’re still interested, there’s a wealth of resources you can find online to learn more about each codex in this series.
For now, just delight in them. Linger over the images. Enjoy their strangeness. Because they are strange, they’re almost alien. Once upon a time in America scenes like these were real. But now the books are almost all we have of such scenes, of the culture which created them.
So in the end, what’s the message of this Mexican codex?
