This work is an attestation to the redeemable characteristics of the past, inspiring the reader to harness the good which our ancestors did, as well as regional traditions that they held. A wide range of topics are present, including the symbiotic relationship between love and loss; hymns and praise, taking part in that which brought the soul joy; sadness, that which every person feels, whether it be due to personal struggles or a gloom-filled wish for the olden days; and amalgamation, poetry which doesn't truly fit the mold of any of the previous sections. In addition to these four parts, the fifth and final covers Caesar's Civil War, from the crossing of the Rubicon to his glorious victory at Thapsus, an undertaking only seen in Marcus Lucanus' works.
