With fifty cents between them saved by their mother, they walked to the river to catch the ferry to Memphis. Finn washed dishes in a saloon, while William, who disliked working indoors, found work as a stable boy in one of the seventeen stables serving Memphis. After seeing a flyer advertising a Texas ranch for sale, William realized he wanted a cowboy's life.
Now a man and feeling discontent, he saved enough to travel as far west as Arkansas. Through a series of events, William inherited enough money to buy the Texas ranch he had always dreamed of.
Lillian Eberly, a Suffragette, is a strong advocate for women's rights. Her assertiveness intimidates most men, but it doesn't seem to affect her new neighbor at all. Infuriated that his rugged handsomeness and calm demeanor weaken her resolve, Lillian finds his indifference frustrating in their love-hate relationship, especially when he can't resist kissing her. Determined to put him in his place like all the other men she has bested with her sharp tongue, she seeks reasons to ride over often, as their ranches are adjacent.
On a day of breaking broncs in a dusty corral, she convinced him to let her ride one of his wild horses. Women were changing and doing whatever they wanted since the suffrage movement began, so he thought, 'Why not?' Exhilarated after successfully riding one of his broncs, she unexpectedly kissed him. However, Lillian didn't take it lightly when he kissed her back--not gently. Not one to shy away from sassy women, he ignored her rants, and returned her constant barbed insults with kisses. Unable to outwit this invincible cowboy with words, she tries to distance herself from him, but William remained the proverbial burr under her saddle blanket.
