This is a comprehensive listing of Sudanese First Day Covers with cachets until 1963 and an overview of Zanzibar First Day Covers. A separate catalog of every Zanzibar First Day Cover known is in preparation. This is a look at rarely seen postal history subjects.
This pamphlet is composed of reprints of articles from First Days magazine, the journal of the American First Day Cover Society.
Within the United States, most First Day literature addresses United States First Day Covers. Non-US First Day Covers, except for Canada, are rarely collected. First Day covers of “unusual' countries, like Susan or Zanzibar, are almost unknown outside of a handful of specialists. They do not have much commercial value, but they are a challenging and fascinating area.
Although these covers are available at reasonable prices when found, their scarcity due to low demand makes them hard to find, making the quest to locate them exciting. These covers - and additional Zanzibar ones - have been displayed competitively in US World Series of Philately stamp shows. Generally, these exhibits have not done well. Judges want to know cachet makers, quantities produced, and the relative rarity of covers. For these two countries, neither is known. It is impossible, therefore, to judge rarity or completeness of knowledge, and high points are not awarded.
