Harmonic Minor Modes: Guitar Fretboard View (Everyfret) (English Edition)

The major scale has seven modes. So does harmonic minor, and almost nobody is taught them.

One of those six is the sound of flamenco, of a great deal of metal, and of most Middle Eastern and klezmer music a guitarist is ever asked to play. It is the fifth degree of harmonic minor and it is called phrygian dominant — A Bb C# D E F G, the scale that gives you a major chord with a flat second above it.

The other five come from the same place, which is the point: learn where one of them sits and you have the rest for nothing.

What is in it

  • Six scales — locrian natural 6, ionian #5, dorian #4 (the Ukrainian dorian), phrygian dominant, lydian #2, and altered diminished.
  • Twelve keys each, chromatically, so you look it up rather than transpose it.
  • Every position of every one, drawn at the fret it actually starts on — each note of the scale inside a window one hand can hold, anchored on each degree in turn, low to high.
  • One climb per chapter, in tab: the whole scale as a single ascending line, each pitch placed exactly once and the strings taken in order.
  • The whole neck first, nut to twelfth fret, with note names and scale degrees on every dot.

One page per key. Nothing here needs you to turn a page to finish an answer.

Every shape is real. Each one was found by a search that checks it against a real hand — a four-fret span, no finger asked to be in two places. Nothing in this book works only on paper.

72 chapters. Six scales, twelve keys, standard tuning.

For players who have the major-scale modes and want the sound the major scale cannot make — and for anyone who has worked out that the flamenco record and the metal record are doing the same thing.

Every diagram in this book is live at everyfret.com — free, no account, nothing to install. Click a note to hear it, pick any position on the neck, or change the key, the scale or the tuning. Each page here prints the address of its own.
