One box and “now move it” is why so many bassists know the minor pentatonic in E and nothing anywhere else. The shape is moveable; the neck it moves along was never in the book.

So every position in here is drawn at the fret it actually starts on, in all twelve keys, on a four-string bass. “Where do I play Eb dorian” is a page you turn to, not arithmetic you do.

What is in it

• Eleven scales — major, the six modes, harmonic minor, both pentatonics and the blues scale.
• Twelve keys each, chromatically, so you look it up rather than transpose it.
• Every position of every one: each note of the scale inside a window one hand can hold, anchored on each degree in turn, low to high — so the last position is the first one an octave up and the neck closes back on itself.
• One climb per chapter, in four-line tab: the whole scale as a single ascending line, each pitch placed exactly once and the strings taken in order.
• The whole neck first, nut to twelfth fret, with note names and scale degrees on every dot.

Four strings in fourths is the one way a bass is simpler than a guitar. No pair of strings is the odd one out, so a shape learned across the low two strings is the same shape across the high two, and no position breaks partway up the neck. These eleven scales give exactly as many positions on four strings as they do on six.

One page per key. Nothing here needs you to turn a page to finish an answer.

Not fingerings. Which finger takes which fret depends on what you played before it and what comes next; a printed answer to that is wrong more often than right. What is printed is where the notes are, and every shape was found by a search that checks it against a real hand — a four-fret span, no finger asked to be in two places.
