Descrição do livro

He stood at the lip of the world, where the forest paused in its endless slumber and the sky seemed to inhale frost with each silent breath. The traveler—wrapped in layers of coarse wool and leather, his boots crusted over with ice—paused to examine the land before him. Snow stretched in every direction, a pale ocean unbroken by hill or hollow, except for the jagged dark of the pines that rose like black teeth against the horizon. Here, where the snow refused footprints back, he had come seeking something he could scarcely name.
A bitter wind, sharper than any blade, lashed across the plain and tugged at his hood, revealing a narrow face etched with years of wandering. He inhaled, tasting the metallic tang of cold, and exhaled clouds that shimmered in the timid light of late afternoon. Though the world lay hushed beneath a heavy sky, the traveler felt the weight of eyes upon him—something ancient, unseen, whose watchfulness did not sleep. He shifted his pack, feeling the reassuring bulk of provisions—dried meat, a few spare blankets, and an old brass compass whose needle quivered as if overwhelmed by the eerie stillness.
In his pocket, a folded scrap of parchment wavered like a captive moth. On it, scrawled in ink that had bled through time, were the words that guided him here: Where footprints dare not linger, the heart of silence waits. He had chased those words across mountain passes and desert plains, through crowded ports and silent monasteries, until they had led him to this forgotten edge of the world. He did not know who had written them—or why—or whether he would find answers beyond this threshold. But the compulsion that burned in his blood would not relent until he had stood where the snow refused his passage.
1. Arrival at the White Expanse
Shoving himself forward, he stepped onto the ledge of the clearing. His boots sank ankle-deep into untouched snow, and for a moment he tested the powdery surface—no snap of crust, no revealing crack of ice. The snow closed around his foot like liquid, and when he lifted his leg, the hollows it left were filled almost instantly, as though the ground itself resisted his intrusion. Fascinated, he planted his foot again, this time forging a track that faded in the instant before he could register its shape.
He frowned, drawing a hand across his brow despite the chill that bit at exposed skin. The phenomenon was not natural; he had traversed frozen landscapes before, but none had gaped so deliberately at his encroachment, swallowing his footprints as if mocking his presence. A sense of dread coiled in his chest—yet he felt a thrill of discovery. The world might be vast, but moments like this—when reality bent to the will of a hidden power—were all too rare.
He took his first true step, and the pattern repeated: his boot pressed into the snow, formed a dim imprint, then vanished. He waited, watching the minute collapses and rebounds of the surface, until the last outline smoothed over. Then he walked, each stride watched by the silent pines, ascending gradually into the dense dark of the forest’s edge.
