Mt. Fuji is usually photographed as a destination. This book follows a climb that ended before the summit. On July 11, 2019, photographer HelloUG set out alone from Fuji Subaru Line Fifth Station on the Yoshida Trail. Across 100 photographs arranged in chronological order, the journey moves through rain, volcanic paths, signs, mountain huts, food, water, communal sleeping quarters, morning fog, and the long descent. After spending the night at Fujisan Hotel at the Original Eighth Station, symptoms consistent with altitude sickness—including headache, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath, and loss of appetite—made continuing feel unsafe. The following morning, after climbing as far as Tomoe-kan, he turned back. MT. FUJI 2019: BEFORE THE SUMMIT is not a guidebook and not a story of conquest. It is a quiet, observational photobook about the physical reality of climbing, the decision to stop, and an experience that remained even without reaching the top.
