Prince Parker, a Salt Lake City racing homing pigeon, loses his fancy dovecote when during a spring race he veers off route to avoid a peregrine falcon. He meets and pairs with a commoner, a beautiful city pigeon named Madge. Over the next year or so, Parker and Madge have several squeakers. Some of them, when fully grown, join Parker and Madge in visiting Salt Lake City’s landmarks. The book’s Afterword contains interesting facts about pigeon racing and pigeons in general and also some instructions for young people who wish to get started in pigeon racing.
