Spring WebFlux is the reactive-stack web framework that sits beside Spring MVC: fully non-blocking, built on Reactive Streams, usually run on Netty. This book is a compact introduction to that way of working. It is not a 500-page Reactor manual, not a Spring Boot 4 migration guide, and it does not replace the official Spring docs. It is a focused on-ramp if you already write Java and want to understand non-blocking and event-driven HTTP on WebFlux.

The reactive model it teaches — Reactive Streams, Reactor’s Mono/Flux, backpressure, and WebFlux as MVC’s non-blocking sibling — is the same model used on current Spring Framework 6–7 and Spring Boot 3–4. New Spring projects in 2026 typically start on Boot 4. Install a current release from start.spring.io and use the official docs for APIs that have moved.

This is not a tour of Spring Boot 4 or Framework 7-only features (API versioning, Jackson 3, modular auto-configuration, RestClient-as-default, and so on). Those shipped after this manuscript. It also does not try to list every Boot 3.x WebFlux API. For depth, pair this with longer books such as Josh Long’s Reactive Spring or Dokuka and Lozynskyi’s Hands-On Reactive Programming in Spring 5, and with the current Spring reference.

By 2026, ordinary CRUD services often stay on Spring MVC (virtual threads made blocking cheaper). WebFlux is still the Spring stack you reach for when you need streaming, backpressure, and event-driven I/O — not because every new API must be reactive. You do not need the newest Boot minor to understand Mono and Flux.
