Descrição do livro

Overview
This isn’t another UX playbook packed with frameworks you’ll never use.
This is design in the wild—messy, fast-moving, and very, very real.

Real World UX is a raw, strategic, and human guide to experience design that works in practice—not just in theory. Drawing from three decades at the intersection of design, tech, strategy, and critical systems thinking, Douglas Rockhill brings you inside the actual process of building meaningful digital experiences for some of the world’s most demanding sectors.
From healthcare and pharma to tech giants and mission-driven orgs, this book is full of real stories, hard-won insights, and design truths forged in pressure—where teams are misaligned, timelines are tight, and “best practices” aren’t enough.

Why This Book?
Because most UX advice lives in a vacuum.
Because design is more than a flow—it’s a relationship.

What’s Inside

  • Honest reflections from 30 years of leading UX at places like Apple, Nike, Microsoft, and XDS
  • A flexible, field-tested design process (Discover → Explore → Create) mapped to real challenges and constraints
  • Tactical breakdowns of key methods: design audits, IA, mood boards, prototypes, and experience maps
  • What to do when the client panics, the user ghosts, or the team disagrees
  • A critical rethinking of empathy, trust, and the ethical weight of design in healthcare and high-impact industries
Each chapter includes:
  • Field Notes: Bite-sized lessons, prompts, and patterns
  • Reality Checks: What happens when the ideal process meets reality
  • Stories from the Studio: Real client moments, friction points, and breakthroughs

Who It’s For
  • UX and product people. Strategists. Creatives. Builders.
Anyone tired of pixel-perfect deliverables that fall flat in real life.
Author Bio
Douglas Rockhill is a designer, strategist, and systems thinker with over 25 years of experience at the intersection of user experience, visual design, and critical theory. He is the founder of The Experience Design Studio (XDS)—an independent creative and technology agency known for building human-centered ecosystems.

A creative leader who blends the rigor of systems thinking with the intuition of design, Douglas has shaped digital experiences for some of the world’s most iconic brands—including Apple, Nike, Martha Stewart, Microsoft, National Geographic, BMS, Sanofi, and Allergan. His work spans global product platforms, patient engagement systems, SaaS startups, and integrated campaigns that translate complexity into clarity.

Before founding XDS, he held senior leadership roles at agencies like R/GA, JWT, Rosetta, and Real Chemistry, where he led multidisciplinary teams on large-scale design and transformation initiatives. His experience leading both design and strategy gives him a rare fluency across creative, technical, and business domains—making him a trusted partner to C-suites, product leads, and innovators navigating uncertainty.

Douglas’s work is grounded in a belief that design is not just about what looks good—it’s about what gets results. His approach combines design thinking, storytelling, and deep user insight to drive results that resonate.
In Real World UX: Field Notes from 30 Years of Human-Centered Design, Douglas shares the lessons, failures, frameworks, and field notes that have shaped his practice, offering readers a candid, tactical, and human look at what it really takes to design experiences that move people.
