What can a work of art reveal once the artist has stopped trying to change it?

Respect began with the true stories of Rosa and Lourdes, two women who were photographed separately and did not meet until the finished work was standing before them. Their images would eventually share a monumental composition inspired by Joaquín Sorolla’s Strolling Along the Seashore.

For nearly two years, visual artist Séfora Camazano searched for the form the work needed. She photographed both women, rebuilt the composition, painted and repainted, rejected solutions that seemed promising, returned to Valencia’s Malvarrosa Beach in search of the right setting, and worked through the technical challenges of transforming a digital image into a physical artwork more than six feet wide.

When Respect was finally completed, Séfora believed she understood how it had come into being.

Three years later, while writing this book, she returned to the original photographs, recordings, messages, dates, abandoned compositions, and decisions preserved in the project archive. Reconstructing the process revealed something unexpected: some of the elements that became central to the finished work had been present from the beginning, long before she understood their significance.

That discovery changed the story she thought she was going to tell.

Respect — The Art of Listening takes readers inside the creation of a work of art, from the first conversations with Rosa and Lourdes to the moment the finished piece leaves the studio and begins to acquire meaning in the eyes of others. Along the way, Camazano explores the uncertain territory between intention and intuition, artistic control and discovery, memory and hindsight.

The book also confronts a more difficult responsibility: what happens when an artist creates with another person’s real story.

Rosa and Lourdes entrusted Séfora with their photographs, their testimonies, and deeply personal experiences. Creating from that material required more than artistic freedom. It meant deciding what could be transformed, what should remain untouched, and where the artist’s authority had to end. Their stories lead to a broader examination of respect, not as an abstract ideal, but as a boundary that becomes visible when we hold something vulnerable in our hands.

Séfora also reflects on intuition, faith, and the forms of knowledge that sometimes precede conscious understanding. Rather than rewriting the past as though every decision had been meaningful from the start, she examines the difference between what she knew while creating the work and what only became visible years later.
