Brewer Rigby has never been much of a hero.
Nor was he a very good rugby league player.
Or even a decent, upstanding member of society.
But when his adopted town of Carbo in the Central West of NSW has its rugby league team and the town’s very existence threatened – Rigby is the reluctant man who needs to put his decades of regret, self-sabotage and questionable behaviour to the side.
Its 2015, and after years of gradual decline, the country mining town of Carbo is hanging on by the thread of Rigby’s old footy socks.
Carbo’s Rugby League club – the Royals – which had been the town’s primary social hub and source of town pride, is in serious jeopardy when the NSW Country league bosses announce they will be merging the town’s rugby league competition with another division.
Four clubs will be cut in the new structure, and Carbo now needs to get its shit together or lose out to the two neighbouring clubs from the larger town next door – Ravenshill.
This kicks off a flurry of merger talks, takeover attempts and general footy politics in a tumultuous period for the Royals.
At a time when unemployment is higher than the rate of public alcoholism, and the average wage in the town has slumped lower than price of a fourth hand Ford Laser – Carbo needs the Royals more than ever.
Will Rigby be able to take advantage of a leadership vacuum and the town’s affection for the club to pilot the Royals into the new era?
Or will Brew’s history of failed relationships, inability to see things through and general lack of discipline come back to haunt him and the Carbo faithful?
And when all is said and done, with the Carbo Royals end up on the same rugby league scrapheap as the Newtown Jets, the Adelaide Rams and the Wangaratta Weasels?
