A patent is required by law to claim an apparatus and forbidden to claim a principle, a rule the
United States Supreme Court settled in 1854, thirty-four years before Tesla filed his first
polyphase patent. He could patent a motor. He could not patent what was interesting about it.
So three hundred documents describe machines in exact detail, and not one of them is permitted to
say what they have in common. This book recovers it from the pattern across the set.
Take the induction motor: three fixed windings, currents out of step, and a magnetic field that
rotates at constant strength while nothing in the machine moves. Take the resonant transformer,
