In The Chord of Matter, the first volume of the Settled Science Heresy series, Richard L. Kennedy explores a provocative correspondence between music and matter. Musical notes are organized by frequency, interval, octave, tension, and resolution. Chemical elements are organized by atomic number, repeating periods, electron shells, bonding relationships, and recurring patterns of stability. Though these two systems are normally taught in different classrooms, they may be expressing the same underlying principle: vibration organizing itself into structure.

Beginning with the simple physics of sound, Kennedy introduces octaves, harmonic ratios, overtones, consonance, and dissonance in language accessible to younger readers and nonspecialists.
