As the so-called Dark Ages descended upon Europe after the collapse of the Roman Empire in the Middle Ages, an alien civilisation was flourishing literally next door, in just about every human field. An Arab/Moorish army landed in Spain in 711 CE and established a rule that would last nearly 800 years. It was not just any ordinary occupation. The invaders would make it their home and develop it into the richest and most powerful country in Europe, where learning and knowledge flourished. It reached new heights in science and technology, medicine, agriculture, and art and architecture. It built some of the most dazzling buildings of the time — mighty fortresses, sumptuous palaces, and graceful mosques. They also built some of Europe’s first universities, laboratories, observatories, and hospitals. By the time this civilisation collapsed and was uprooted from the Iberian Peninsula at the end of the 15th century, it had left its indelible marks on the region — both in literary terms and in its physical monuments. This is the story of that civilisation and its achievements. Although the book is primarily about all the surviving monuments it left behind that still mesmerise visitors to this day, it will also give a compact account of the history of that civilisation, its achievements, and the effect it had on Europe and the European Renaissance.
