Maps, compasses, GPS units, and smart phone applications are excellent pieces of navigational equipment. They are precise, easy to use, and were invented for a very specific reason - to get from here to there without getting lost. There are other methods to find your way, though. These unconventional methods are undoubtedly less precise than purpose-built navigational tools, and they may not match a heading from a compass if the magnetic declination adjustment is not set, but sometimes all you need to know is a general cardinal direction - north, south, east, or west. Perhaps you simply want to impress a parent, friend, or colleague by telling them which direction is north without looking at a compass.
