A young mathematician wandered into an exhibition in Amsterdam in 1954, saw a picture of a staircase that could not exist, and went home to draw a better one. He drew a triangle. Every corner of it is perfectly reasonable. The whole thing is impossible. He called it impossibility in its purest form, and then he spent the next seventy years finding the same shape everywhere else.
Roger Penrose has been called the greatest living geometer, the last of the old-fashioned universalists, and — by people who love him and mean it kindly — completely unreasonable. He proved that black holes are not a mathematical accident but something general relativity insists upon, and collected a Nobel Prize for it fifty-five years later. He invented a pair of tiles that cover the floor forever without ever repeating themselves, and then nature turned out to have thought of it first. He built a theory of space out of light rays instead of points. He also spent three decades arguing that human understanding cannot be a computation, and that the answer is hiding in the scaffolding of brain cells, which is either the deepest idea in modern science or the most beautifully constructed mistake anybody has made in living memory.
This book takes both possibilities seriously, because Penrose deserves nothing less. It follows him from a house full of painters and geneticists, through a wartime childhood in Canada, past a stepfather who helped build the first stored-program computer, to the street corner in London where a thought about trapped light interrupted a conversation and changed cosmology. It gives his most contested arguments at full strength before weighing them, and it says plainly where the weighing comes out.
Along the way it asks the question his whole career keeps circling. What makes a thing impossible — the world, or the description we insist on using? A triangle that works at every corner and fails as a whole is not a curiosity. It is a warning about how theories are built, and it applies to more of physics than anyone would like.
