Descrição do livro

Arin stood at the edge of the old quarter just as dawn stretched its pale fingers across the spired rooftops of New Verdance. The city, once a vibrant testament to humanity’s triumph over drought and desolation, now throbbed with hollow echoes of past glories. Towering glass domes and solar arrays gleamed in the distance—arteries of a civilization rebuilt—but closer in, the winding alleys were choked by rusted metal and rotting wood. Here, nature had not been tamed; it had been abandoned.
She adjusted the strap of her satchel and knelt beside the collapsed greenhouse’s iron frame. Vines as thick as her arm had buried the structure under a tangle of blackened leaves and thorny tendrils. Twenty years ago, this place had housed the world’s greatest collection of experimental flora: genetically engineered plants designed to purify air, resist blistering heat, and bloom in soils poisoned by industrial runoff. Then came the Great Bloom—when an uncontrolled mutation swept through the biodomes, turning friend to foe—and the Gardens of Tomorrow were sealed off, declared lost to legend.
Arin inhaled, taste tinged with both excitement and dread. She did not seek fame; she sought answers. Her grandmother, Liora Vale, had been one of the chief horticulturists at Verdance Labs before the catastrophe. In her wheelchair, grandmother’s gnarled hands once traced the veins of sunset orchids and spoke of “the right balance between human ingenuity and nature’s wisdom.” Then, as the Bloom unravelled, those words became a whisper lost in the chaos. Arin held the hope that buried somewhere among the ruins lay Liora’s journal—and with it, a path to restoring what mankind had nearly destroyed.
She set to work. First, to clear a path. With a galvanized hoe and pruning shears—tools issued by the University’s archaeological division—Arin hacked away at brambles, their sap hissing where the blade nicked them. Each cut released a stale, musty perfume: a mingling of decayed foliage, damp earth, and something metallic. She paused to kick aside a rusted watering can, marveling at how quickly abandonment had reclaimed this place. Broken shards of safety glass glittered like fallen stars among the roots.
