From a Liverpool tuberculosis ward where a cart of percussion instruments stopped at a sick boy's bed, to the holiday-camp dance floors where he learned to play for the room, to the ten weeks in 1962 in which a hostile crowd and a skeptical producer were won over by a beat, this is the story of how a left-handed boy who played a right-handed kit because he could not afford a choice became the drummer no one could copy and no one could replace.
Along the way, the book listens closely to the records: the slowed-down thunder of "Rain," the stutter of "Ticket to Ride," the restraint of "Come Together," the fills-as-melody of "A Day in the Life," and the loop Ringo invented by hand on "Tomorrow Never Knows," decades before the technology existed. It follows him into the yellow submarine, where the animators cast him as the hero, and into the studio in 1968, where he walked out of the greatest band in the world believing he did not matter, and came back to a kit covered in flowers. And it follows the long, generous life after the Beatles: the hits, the films, the hard years and the recovery, the All-Starr Band, the knighthood, the overdue verdict from the Hall of Fame, and two words said at noon every seventh of July.
