Tom Barker grew up toward the end of the “Golden Age of Radio.” He listened to programs like Tom Mix, Captain Midnight, Sgt. Preston, and Sky King in the 5 to 6 PM “Juvenile Hour” on various networks – mainly Mutual Broadcasting. In this memoir, we travel back to those thrilling days of yesteryear and along with radio and program history, we get to see some of the actual promotional gimcracks Tom acquired by eating cereal and sending the box top with ten cents in coin to the sponsor (Ralston Purina, Quaker Oats, Ovaltine, Peter Pan Peanut Butter, Wheaties, Rice Crispies). Before television, the audience formed images in “The Theater of the Mind.” These radio shows are the foundation of Tom’s own creative endeavors as evidenced by over a dozen books he has written.
