Transactions by Iowa State Horticultural Society. The volume collects the Iowa State Horticultural Society’s annual report for the year 1872 and compiles the proceedings of its seventh annual meeting held at Davenport, January 21–23, 1873. It includes officers and directors for 1872, lists of members, and a series of secretary’s reports covering the state of horticulture in Iowa, orchard management, fruit crops, pest control, and exhibitions. The book also presents essays on apples, pears, small fruits, raspberries, and cherries, discussions on hedges, forest trees, and timber planting, as well as reports from district committees, meteorology, entomology, and the society’s legal and organizational framework, including the constitution and by-laws and a premium list. Supplementing the proceedings are letters, extracts from correspondence, and notes on the state’s agricultural policy, the role of the Agricultural College, and recommendations for future horticultural practice in Iowa. The work reflects late 19th-century efforts to promote orchardism, forestry, and horticultural education in Iowa.
