Descrição do livro

Thirty refrigeration faults, presented the way they arrive on site: a symptom, an operator's account, and a table of readings, some of which matter and some of which do not. On each one you name two candidate causes, choose the single test that separates them, and say which reading would prove you wrong. Then you check your reasoning against an answer key that explains why the other candidates were set aside, which measurement supports the diagnosis, and what to fix so the fault does not come back.

This is a practice book, not a reference. It is written for refrigeration and HVAC technicians, apprentices, and instructors who want to stop topping up and swapping parts on suspicion and start diagnosing from superheat, subcooling, and the readings that go with them.

HOW THE WORKBOOK IS ORGANISED

Chapters 1 to 3 set out the method and the background: the five-step diagnostic loop, a system refresher written from the failure-signature angle (the cycle as a whole, condenser and high side, evaporator and low side, metering device, compressor, refrigerant circuit, controls and electrical), a worked reading of superheat and subcooling, the instrument set, a simplified symbol reference, the symptom-cause matrix, and where to put the gauge. A worked example with a completed worksheet and a red-herring practice page show what a good answer looks like before you start.

Chapters 4 to 7 hold the scenarios in four families: condenser and high side, evaporator, airflow, and defrost, charge, metering, and circuit, and compressor, electrical, and controls. Each scenario sits on a left-hand page with its readings; the facing page is a worksheet with space for two hypotheses, the first test, the rejecting reading, and the repair. Every chapter opens with the procedures its scenarios depend on, such as reading superheat and subcooling, the off-cycle chart check, reading airflow and the air drop, reading the defrost, searching for a leak, setting up and checking a TXV, testing the compressor's electrical side, and proving a controller reading, and closes with a field checklist.

Chapter 8 is the answer key with full reasoning and a symptom index. Chapter 9 is a final review week: a rapid review, common traps, an extra practice set, a troubleshooting log template, a baseline table for your own systems, and a sign-off checklist. A glossary closes the book.

WHAT YOU WILL PRACTISE

- Reading superheat and subcooling against the maker's targets for that system, refrigerant, metering device, and load
- Separating a dirty condenser, an overcharge, and non-condensable gas with the split, subcooling, and the controlled off-cycle check
- Reading the evaporator air drop together with measured airflow, the frost pattern, and superheat, instead of from one number
- Finding a leak, a restriction, a mis-mounted TXV bulb, or a wet system from the readings before any refrigerant is added
- Testing the compressor's electrical side safely and judging the compressor by the maker's performance test
- Spotting the readings that are out of specification but not the cause

Every test in the book assumes trained and authorised personnel, rated instruments and PPE, isolation and lockout where the procedure requires electrical access or opening the circuit, recovery rather than venting, and the precedence of the equipment manufacturer's procedures, the technician's certification rules, and the applicable regulations. Pressures are in psi and temperatures in degrees Fahrenheit, with a conversion table included. The scenarios are composites written for instruction; system values are given as that system's specification, and they are not affiliated with any manufacturer.
