On April 20, 1963, twenty-two-year-old Raymond Thompson "Tim" Lamphere died after a shooting inside a residence in Endicott, New York. Police responded. A prosecutor became involved. Newspapers reported the case. A grand jury considered the evidence.

Decades later, Dr. Mozelle Martin began reconstructing the case after promising Tim's surviving brother that his story would not disappear. Particular attention is given to the physical questions the surviving record can no longer answer: the shotgun's loading condition, weapon control, trigger movement, muzzle distance, hand position, wound evidence, and whether the physical evidence supported the account ultimately accepted by the community.

This book does not declare a killer, overturn a grand jury decision, or present family recollection as proven evidence. It is an investigative reconstruction of an unfinished historical record and an examination of what happens when the documents needed to test an old story no longer survive.
